Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you thought, “Why me, Lord?” Today was one of those days for me. Driving through heavy snow in SouthWestern Ontario countryside, my vehicle slid off the road and into a ditch. I was stuck—tires spinning uselessly, no way out on my own. Frustrated and cold, I waited for help, wondering why God would let this happen.
Who wants to be in a ditch? Literally or figuratively, it’s uncomfortable, inconvenient, and sometimes downright scary. But as the tow truck driver arrived and pulled me out, something shifted in my heart. Instead of just relief, I found myself quietly thanking God—not despite the ditch, but because of it.
Why on earth would anyone thank God for landing in a ditch? Because in that unexpected moment of waiting, God opened a door I never saw coming.
The tow truck driver was a young man, polite and hardworking, but as we chatted while he hooked up the chains, the conversation turned deeper. He shared that he’s been searching for God, wrestling with big questions about faith, purpose, and whether he’s even worthy of God’s love. Life has thrown him struggle after struggle—doubts, mistakes, feelings of unworthiness that make him question if grace could really apply to someone like him.
Right there, on the side of a snowy road, I had the privilege of sharing the wonders of God’s saving grace. I told him how we’ve all fallen short, how none of us deserve it on our own, but that’s exactly why Jesus came—to rescue the unworthy, to offer forgiveness and new life freely. We talked about how God doesn’t wait for us to clean up our act; He meets us in the mess, in the ditches of life, and pulls us out with love we can’t earn.
The conversation was received with such warmth and openness. His eyes lit up as we spoke, and I could sense the Holy Spirit moving. By the time I drove away, I wasn’t just grateful to be out of the ditch—I was blessed beyond words. That young man was seeking, and God used a simple roadside mishap to cross our paths.
Friends, this is how God works. What looks like a setback to us is often a divine appointment. The Bible reminds us so clearly:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28, NIV)
All things—even a snowy ditch, even a tow truck delay. God weaves them together for good, often for the good of others too. He turns our interruptions into opportunities to shine His light.
And when we wonder why His plans don’t always make sense to us, Scripture gives us this beautiful truth:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9, NIV)
God’s ways are higher. Mysterious, yes—but always purposeful, always loving. He orchestrates moments we never would have chosen, so that His grace can reach hearts that need it most.
To anyone feeling unworthy today, hear this: God’s grace isn’t reserved for the “put-together” people. It’s for the strugglers, the doubters, the ones in the ditches. Jesus said it Himself:
“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:31-32, NIV)
If you’re seeking Him, know that He’s already seeking you. And if you’re a believer, stay open—God might just use your “ditch” to reach someone else’s.
I’m still smiling thinking about that conversation. The ditch was worth it. God works in mysterious ways, but they’re always ways of love and redemption.
What about you? Has God ever turned a frustrating moment into something beautiful? I’d love to hear your stories in the comments. Let’s encourage one another that God’s Truth Awaits—even on the side of the road.
Blessings, Wayne Wiebe
